DIY: Bird Cage Veil

Want to go for that vintage feel on your wedding day? A bird cage veil would be the perfect touch. Instead of spending your money on a custom made veil, we suggest you make it! Its a simple, inexpensive project that has a stunning finished look.

What you’ll need:

  1. A metal hair comb
  2. Needle and white thread
  3. Scissors
  4. Measuring tape
  5. Fine mesh tulle cut 1×28″ (or lace ribbon)
  6. French netting 9×25″ or more to be safe!

Once you’ve gathered all your supplies, it’s time to get started.

Step 1:

To measure how much french netting you’ll need, simply wrap it around your head and pinch where the two sides meet and cut. Then, lay the netting flat and fold over so both sides meet. Measure up 5 inches and cut inward on a diagonal.

Step 2:

Open the netting up and lay it flat. Thread your needle (make sure you give yourself enough thread) and make a nice knot at the end. Starting from the bottom corner and thread the needle through each “diamond” shaped dot on the netting all the way to the other side.

Step 3:

Once you get to the end, pull all the netting down to the end where you started. All the netting should be gathered and you should have the extra thread off to the side.

Step 4:

Put the netting to the side for now. Take the 1×28′ tulle and make a knot around the top part of the metal hair comb. Begin to wrap the tulle around the top between each comb “tooth.” At the end, make a knot.

Step 5:

Almost done! Now, take the needle and start a simple stitch (over and under) through the tulle you attached to the comb. Make sure when you begin stitching, the comb is facing the correct way (netting on the bottom and the comb placed on top, lined up with the gathered part and curved side down). Go back and forth with the stitching as many times as you want to make it secure.

Step 6:

Make another knot when you’re done sewing, cut off all the loose threads and you’re finished!

With six easy steps, you have yourself a vintage inspired bird cage veil! To make it more unique, we suggest clipping in a beautiful white flower by the comb.

*Note: If you choose a fancy, detailed hair comb it will become more difficult when wrapping the tulle, but it’s still doable.

Good Luck!
